2013 Cabernet Sauvignon "Block 15"
Estelle Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley
As many of you know, for most of my overall production, I have gone to where the going is good, to the Pinot Noir Mecca that is the Sta. Rita Hills. But I am still clinging on to one little block of Cabernet Sauvignon over in the Santa Ynez Valley, because I simply believe it is the best. Going into this most recent harvest, my only issue with Block 15 at the Estelle Vineyard was that the fruit was starting to get extremely expensive; so much so that I couldn't afford to make the whole block. So this year I split the three acres with my buddy Steve Beckman over at the Beckmen Winery. But the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of being able to ask another winemaker, "Hey, do you think this is the best block of Cab in the County?" I won't have to wait until Steve evaluates the 2015 that he just crushed, I'll simply give him a bottle of my 2013 which shows huge berry fruit, loads of herbs and spice, all in a bomb that hits the palate with lots of lingering cassis love. I can't wait to see the look on his face.
