2013 Pinot Noir "Radical"
Radian Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills
My Radical Pinot Noir comes from a small hillside that lies in the heart of the spectacular Radian Vineyard. Making wine from a site like this is something every winemaker should experience. Why is it Radical? Well, it has perfect exposure, perfect drainage, the right row direction, well-chosen clones, inexplicably cool rocks in the soil, and great execution by the owner/grower, Jonata Winery. It's not like I need to employ a lot of gimmicks to make this stuff beautiful. I don't cold soak, nor do I punch it down more than a few times during fermentation. Saignee? Are you kidding?! I'm not trying to create a monster; I'm trying to chaperon a great soil. With a vineyard like this, it's all about producing a wine of great purity. In 2013, I did my best, once again, to simply let it blossom.
